Location and size:

Jamalpur district is located in the west of Mymensingh district and south of Sherpur district. Islampur is one of the 7 upazilas of Jamalpur district. Islampur upazila is bordered by Dewanganj and Baksiganj to the north, Melandah and Madarganj to the south, Sadar and Srivardi upazilas of Sherpur district to the east and Bogra and Gaibandha districts to the west. The area of Islampur upazila is 353 square kilometers.
Geography: Jamuna River flows through the western side of Islampur Upazila and Brahmaputra River flows through the northeastern part. The topography of this upazila is floodplain. There are also numerous canals in this upazila. The reputation and recognition of this upazila for Kasa industry is worldwide.



Population: The total population of this upazila is 2,98,429 people (as per 2011 census). Males are 1,48,438 and females are 14,9991. But the current population is around 350,000.
Education Rate: The education rate of this upazila is 34.40%.



Total number of voters: 1,81,220, male: 89,334, female: 91,886.

Problem: The year-round erosion of Brahmaputra and Yamuna rivers is the biggest problem of the people of this upazila.
As two big rivers such as Yamuna river and Brahmaputra river flow through an upazila, this upazila gets flooded even during normal monsoons, causing extreme suffering in public life. Providing island chare services (transportation of teachers to schools, transport of health and family welfare workers, disaster relief) is very difficult during floods.
